Blues Manager Maresca Rejects Man City Links as Pure Gossip
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has branded fresh reports connecting him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The 45-year-old, who once served as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing rumours surrounding his next move.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in the summer of 2024, has a contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a potential extension option.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is no time for these kind of things."
He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I ignore it because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, currently sitting in fourth position in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a lunchtime fixture.
Tensions After Recent Comments
Maresca's latest statement come after he referred to a recent 48-hour period as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.
Those original remarks had fueled widespread speculation of a potential rift between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about different things. But about the post-Everton media session, no."
The Italian did confirm he would definitely remain at the club for the coming campaign and urged supporters to "continue to support the team".
In brighter news, Maresca revealed that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, possibly available for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The perceived strain between Maresca and the club's hierarchy persists as an unhealed issue that still cause concern.
While there has been no further escalation of the situation in the open, there has equally been no resolution offered, creating the disagreement unresolved.
The atmosphere during the manager's media briefings has grown notably awkward, leading to fears it could impact what has otherwise been a promising beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting situation is positive: they are fourth in the Premier League, have reached the League Cup semi-finals, and can secure a better European draw with strong results in their final matches.
The lingering question is whether this off-field situation might eventually disrupt a team that was beginning to appear cohesive.
